Dry but informative

This book captures both the best and worse of the college textbook market. It is extremely informative, providing a thorough overview of each major school of counseling and psychotherapy. It is also faithful to provide a balanced look at each system's weaknesses and strengths, and the structure of the text is consistent throughout, enabling the reader to quickly reference and summarize the information contained in each chapter.

That being said, the book is as dry as dirt; there are few images, few meaningful text interactions (questions or otherwise), and a technical writing style that makes minimal effort at engaging the reader. Most students will struggle to read more than a few pages at a time. The book functions much better as an occasional reference text rather than a book to be read through by a class or interested student.

About the Author

Leo Razdolsky, Ph.D., P.E., S.E., has more than 45 years' experience in structural engineering. His expertise includes high-rise and mid-rise building design, field inspections, and construction management. Specialty projects include stadiums, cable structures, exhibition halls and pavilions, power plants, cooling towers, and bridges. Dr. Razdolsky has been teaching various structural engineering courses at the University of Illinois at Chicago and Northwestern University for more than 15 years. For the past five years, he has been conducting research connected with the analytical methods of obtaining the structural fire load and high-rise building design subjected to abnormal fire conditions. Dr. Razdolsky is currently a member of the Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat's (CTBUH's) Fire & Safety Working Group.

A really great book

This is a really great book that considers the collaboration effort of fire protection specialists and structural engineers in building design. Some of the most important recommendations provided by NIST (NIST, Final Report of the National Construction Safety Team on the Collapses of the World Trade Center Towers, 2009) after the tragic 9/11/2001 events are as follows:
1. "Increased structural integrity, including methods for preventing conditions that could result in progressive collapse (when a building or a significant portion of a building collapses due to disproportionate spread of an initial local failure), standardizing the estimation of wind loads that frequently govern the design of tall buildings, and enhancing the stability of tall buildings.
2. Enhanced fire resistance of structures, including the technical basis for determining construction classification and fire resistance ratings, improvements to the technical basis for standard fire resistance testing methods, adoption of the "structural frame" approach to fire resistance ratings, and in-service performance requirements and conformance assessment criteria for spray-applied fire resistive materials.
3. New methods for designing structures to resist fires, including the objective of burnout without collapse, the development of performance-based methods as an alternative to current prescriptive design methods, the development and evaluation of new fire resistive coating materials and technologies, evaluation of the fire performance of conventional and high-performance structural materials, and elimination of technical and standards barriers to the introduction of new materials and technologies.
4. Education and training programs for fire protection engineers, structural engineers, and architects".

This book bridges the gap between prescriptive and performance-based methods and simplifies very complex and comprehensive computer analyses to the point that structural fire loads have a simple approximate analytical expression that can be used in structural analysis on a day-to-day basis.
This book covers a lot, and is more comprehensive than other books of its type. It has very good material on `traditional way' of structural fire design using standard temperature-time curve and parametric fire curves (that are incorporated into Eurocode 1-1-2, annex A), as well as the new (author's) approach to the performance-based method.
The computational procedures that are developed in this book were then applied to create the functional relationships between structural fire load (SFL) and opening factor; fuel load; fire duration; decay period; geometry of the fire compartment, etc. The comparison of Eurocode parametric curves and SFL curves is also presented in this book. Finally, the computational procedure for passive fire protection design is also established in this book. The output of such computations is the temperature-time function that is used for structural analyses and design. Traditional (standard) structural systems (such as beams, simple frames, trusses, and arches) subjected to the SFL are analyzed and designed.
The book provides an excellent and detailed guide to critical issues that are connected with the structural fire load, including making transparent practices for undertaking the building design process to evaluate the structures behavior subjected to such loading condition. Filled with well-researched data about fire protection material types, it also contains excellent reference sections at the end of each chapter. It is well organized and presented, the examples easy to follow and the problems flow from the material.
The main audience is practicing structural and fire prevention engineers. The scope of the work is broad enough to be useful to practicing and research engineers and to serve as a teaching tool in colleges and universities.

The 1960s - a decade of change in more ways than one

Author Tim Radford makes a compelling case that with all of the wars, social upheaval, and political unrest of the 1960s, many people may have overlooked the scientific revolutions of that decade. The book focuses on four areas of science that have had dramatic impacts on future generations:

* Worldwide communications networks served by orbiting satellites
* An understanding of plate tectonics and how it affects the earth's geology
* The Big Bang Theory and how it altered our view of the universe
* The eradication of smallpox

The author's approach reminded me a bit of the old TV series "Connections" (1970s) and "The Day the Universe Changed" (1980s), both hosted by science historian James Burke, who demonstrated how various discoveries, scientific achievements, and historical world events were built from one another successively in an interconnected way to bring about particular aspects of modern technology. For example, in the decades since our understanding of plate tectonics has improved, procedures have been developed which saved many lives. In Japan, as devastating as the earthquake of 2011 was, by the time the first tsunami waves reached the coast, warnings and automatic shutdowns had already begun all over the Japanese mainland, responses that saved many lives.

The book includes some fascinating tidbits of history. For example, smallpox, which was eradicated in 1977 after more than a decade of efforts by the World Health Organization, is one of only two infectious diseases to have been eradicated, the other being rinderpest (an African cattle disease), which was declared eradicated in 2011. The earliest physical evidence of smallpox was found in the mummified remains of Ramses V, an Egyptian pharaoh who died in 1157 BC, although the disease is believed to have predated Ramses by several thousand years.

On a personal note, I was a teenager in the 1960s, so I saw firsthand the scientific developments that the book describes, and how much they've influenced our lives during the half century since then. The book is a well written, very interesting account of scientific breakthroughs and developments during one of the most tumultuous decades of the 20th century.

My Comments on Science that Changed the World

Author Tim Radford presents four scientific achievements that have had remarkable influence in the course of last 50 years:
* Worldwide communications, which is influencing every activity of our lives
* Eradication of smallpox in 1977, after thousands of years harming humanity
* Plate tectonics displacements that permit know more about the destructive earthquakes
* Broader understanding of the universe that stimulates the construction of powerful telescopes suspended in the space
Is a well-written book, which adsorbs and stimulates to a continued reading until its end. Unfortunately Mr. Radford missed the exceptional findings and treatments related to medicine.

Interesting discussion scientific history

This is an interesting short book about four important scientific discoveries from the 60s and 70s. It does a great job of following the long term effects of the discoveries and thereby demonstrates the accumulative nature of scientific progress. It necessarily excludes a lot of important science from that time period- for instance, it was a time during which the foundations of modern molecular biology were being laid- but there is no denying the importance of the discoveries chosen, and the book is on the whole a very good read.

About the Author
S. R. Nagpaul was visiting Professor of Mathematics at Ohio University 1983-1984 and 1999-2004. He was formerly Head of the Department of Mathematics at St. Stephen's College, Delhi. Dr. Nagpaul received his Ph.D. from Harvard University under G. Birkhoff. He is a coauthor of two other texts: BASIC ABSTRACT ALGEBRA, Cambridge University Press, and LINEAR ALGEBRA, New Age Publisher. His special interest is in Discrete Mathematics.

S. K. Jain is a Distinguished Professor of Mathematics at Ohio University. He is also the Director of the Center of Ring Theory and its Applications. Before joining the faculty at Ohio University, he was a Reader in Mathematics at the University of Delhi (1965-70). Dr. Jain has held visiting professor appointments at several institutions worldwide. His visiting positions include the Riverside, Santa Barbara and Berkeley campuses of the University of California, the Ohio State University in Columbus, North Carolina State University in Raleigh, University of Chicago, McMaster University in Hamilton and University of Frankfurt as well as the Indian Statistical Institute, and the Indian Institute of Technology. Dr. Jain has authored more than 100 research articles that have been published in professional journals. He was awarded the Outstanding Graduate Faculty Award, 1999- Ohio University. A life member of the Indian Mathematical Society, he is also a member of the American Mathematical Society and the Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics. He has delivered Professional lectures at mathematical meetings all over the world and has been the organizer of conferences on many topics in Abstract Algebra. He is an executive editor of the East-West Journal of Mathematics and executive editor of the Journal of Algebra and its Applications, published by World Scientific Press. He has supervised 18 Ph.D. dissertations in noncommutative rings, modules, and applied linear algebra.

It is written with the benefit of a long-term vision of Portuguese history, and it emphasizes the significance of Portugal's new European orientation after centuries of global and oceanic preoccupations. After an account of the collapse of the old regime in 1974, the book studies the complex revolutionary period that followed, and the struggle in Europe and Africa to define the future role of Europe's then poorest country. These events also had international repercussions which transformed the balance of forces in southern Africa, following the collapse of Europe's last overseas empire. The consequent actions and reactions of the European powers and the United States are examined, and telling comparisons are also drawn with later developments in Eastern Europe and with the wider collapse of the communist movement.

Fluent, scholarly -- but who is the audience?

I was living in Portugal during most of the events that Mr. Maxwell describes in this book, and therefore began reading it with great interest. I was gratified with the level of scholarship that Mr. Maxwell brought to this topic, sadly neglected outside of Portugal. Mr. Maxwell writes with the familiarity of someone with firsthand experience of this period of Portuguese contemporary political history. This familiarity may be at the root both of the book's considerable strengths as well as its weakness. At its strongest, Mr. Maxwell's writing is a fluent, succinct exposition of the first few years following the Portuguese revolution of April 25, 1974 (and the political and historical context leading up to it). He gets it right, focusing on all the key characters and events, with an intimate understanding of the socio-political dynamics surrounding these events. His research is sound and fairly comprehensive. And he chooses to organize his analysis around the failure of the Portuguese left, particularly the Communist party, to appropriate the post-revolutionary period and stand up to the rise of a moderate Socialist Party. This is exactly the focus to take in order to link post-colonial Portugal to the European Union that it embraced.

But perhaps because he is intimately familiar with his topic, Mr. Maxwell tends to leave his audience behind. On occasion he will drop a name or mention an event that may have significant evocative power for someone familiar with that place and time but that, without more, is lost on others. Brevity is a virtue, but not at the expense of one's audience. An empathetic writer will be sensitive to when his audience may need a digression to set the scene or explain the context. I was fortunate to have the background to grasp the significance of names and events and to fill in the occasional gap. But for the same reason, Mr. Maxwell didn't tell me much I didn't already know. Which begs the question, who is the audience? Anyone with the level of familiarity necessary to fully appreciate this topic will probably find the book shallow. At the same time, a reader unfamiliar with this topic will likely keep getting lost -- a danger aggravated by a not-so-linear narrative. At the very least, without guidance from the author, that same reader may inadvertenly gloss over some of the most interesting and evocative parts of Mr. Maxwell's book.
