the translator makes too many apologies for the term satanism in the footnotes.. defined once or twice is fine, while not even necessary for the initiated, but to go on and on using non-synonyms towards it's understanding may only calm the nervous so much while risking total misunderstanding by those of them who seek harder than they pray.. BUT the subject matter and the (as far as i can tell) translation of this great work is of huge importance and clarity! this is not a pornographic outer temple book! this is for those vigilant in their duty! i was corresponding with the translator before the book was published and i don't think even he understood what a gem he was truly working on here! it is superb! i plan to get the series! blessings all! - rev. nazaright

This book not only did not contain anything in regards to sex magic, it quite frankly had nothing about sex, now if your looking for cool quotes on philosophy on mankind absconding religion in favor of freeing themselves from the archaic rules of a repressed society. then this is the book for you. I felt like the little old lady in the commercial back in the day that kept screaming where's the beef!!!, now while I understand back in those days folks got a thrill of dressing up like warlocks and pretending to be leaders of high magical sex cults *eye roll* I can certainly see the thrill in those boring days, and need to liven things up a bit but come on!! true sex magic is no mystery or requires initiation into some "secret order" if you are the average human devoid of repression love sex and approach it from the angle of a 7 course meal with Mozart playing in the background. then you my friend are a sex magician. if you like your sex quick fast and in a hurry, five minutes of animistic putting holes in the hallway walls with DMX blasting in the background, you also are a sex magician. and as for hanging isn't that the same foolishness David Carridean did that had him making a quick trip back to the ancestral realm? nuff said. then on page 88 where the priestess can only be blond haired and not any other ethnic race because this is the law? I had to lol at that, these "folks" running around thinking they created something need to recognized they very teachings they followed originated from those temples in Kemet and from Sumerian rituals which were black people. now while I have no beefs with other races claiming their thang, lets not act like you were the originators and put in that racist law of blond priestess crap. anyone from any race can practice sex magic, its a divine birthright and quite frankly the quickies path to spiritual illumination and evolution. also so much for her sex magic rituals, her husband ran off (yes I'm throwing shade), it appears this was more hype than actual real sex magic goings on. if you want the basic tenets of sex magic look elsewhere such ass sexual sorcery by Jason Newcomb or Jewel in the Lotus by Sunyata Avinasha. now that's the nutz and bolts of sex magic. keep in mind if you love sex and recognize the divinity in sex as just another pathway to the divine (I'm also not talking about boinking random folks) then you are well on your way.

Gorgeous book

Absolutely stunning artwork in this, makes me want to buy another just so I can frame the pretty pictures!!!! I really enjoyed this, the story is sad, but a good story, all the artwork is beyond wonderful!!! I suggest this book to anyone that likes to get lost in the artwork.

Absolutely stunning artwork; more of a picture book than a graphic novel

I got an eGalley of this book to review through NetGalley(dot)com. Thanks to Dark Horse and NetGalley for giving me a chance to review this book. This book was full of absolutely stunning illustrations paired with a gothic and sweet story.

The story is about a young boy named Sasha who has been abandoned by his parents. He ventures into the woods and befriends a black cat. Together they stumble upon the Misty Circus. As part of the Misty Circus they go on a number of adventures.

The illustrations throughout this book are absolutely stunning and beautiful. They all have a very beautiful gothic, sweet, and melancholy tone to them which matches the story perfectly. I really enjoyed looking at these beautiful and somewhat odd pictures.

The story is simple, sweet, and magical. The story has a gothic flare to it with deep dark woods and witches. The Misty Circus is a magical place. This book features two smaller stories. The first is about Sasha finding the Misty Circus. The second is about Sasha journeying to a land full of witches and befriending a lonely young witch. The story has a heavy French overtone to it, the poems are in French (with translation to English) and the pictures have a French flare to them.

These are stories that would be appropriate for all ages. Younger children might be a bit scared at the idea of Sasha's father abandoning him and also maybe a bit scared of the witches.

Overall I really really enjoyed this book. It has beautiful pictures and a gothically sweet story. Sasha is a young boy that is a bit different and finds his place in life at the Misty Circus. The friendship between him and his cat is touching as well. I highly recommend this to those who love fantasy graphic novels; although this is more of a picture book than a true graphic novel.

Bold, in your face, and full of love - Modern Israeli Cooking

I am a huge fan of Israeli cuisine and have read numerous cookbooks in the last several years focusing on this diverse cuisine, so I was excited to be offered "Modern Israeli Cooking" by Danielle Oron, the creative force behind Moo Milk Bar and the blog "I Will Not East Oysters." Danielle's family moved from Tel Aviv to New Jersey when she was a toddler, and her family was known as "those crazy Israelis." In her words, these recipes combine her culinary background in French technique with classic Israeli flavors to create new and modern dishes.

Modern Israel is a melting pot; you'll find cuisine from Morocco, Eastern Europe, Yemen, Egypt, Iraq and Turkey. Dishes are served family-style with a lot of side plates consisting of salads and dips; this is my personal culinary heaven. The recipes are divided into weekdays (chicken shawarma rice bowl, kofta kebab freekeh salad, za'atar chicken, pashtida), Fridays (challah, ricotta and za'atar ravioli, lemon chicken with olives, harissa lamb meatballs), beach (peel and eat harissa shrimp - if you haven't guessed already, this is NOT a kosher cookbook), salmon ceviche, chermoula fish tacos, seared sesame tuna), slow cooking (braised pomegranate short ribs, roasted garli and apricot chicken, hawaij oxtail ragu, pastrami), brunch (shakshuka, bourekas, babka French toast, za'atar sesame mini bagels), midnight (za'atar fried eggs, feta grilld cheese, cinnamon challah), salads and sides (tabbouleh, carrots several ways, pickled beets), sweets (saled tahini chocolate chip cookies, tahini-swirled brownies, halva morning buns, honey and apple cake), and stapes (tahini, ancho chili harissa, labne, schug, preserved lemons, dukkah). Ingredients are given in US (volume) and metric.

Danielle's commentary is on the hip side; recipe subtitles frequently involve food puns and cultural insights, like the mild red pepper harissa: "If you like the flavor, but you have a death wish / enjoy S&M, add more of the Thai chilis and a bit more hot paprika.") or tahini: "We put this sh*t on everything."

True to the book's goal, you will find classic flavors with modern twists; the beloved sabich has been turned into a breakfast bowl with shredded potato hash, falafel gets some help from spinach and is served with green tahini and sauerkraut, you'll find Sephardic pastries like bourekas supersized and dressed up with mushrooms and caramelized onions, Milky has been reinvented as a decadent, boozy pot de creme. I loved the peppered watermelon and feta, as watermelon + mint + Bulgarian feta is a staple breakfast in my house; here, Korean red pepper flakes and black pepper kick this up a notch.

Overall this is a fun, young take on modern Israeli cooking - you'll find many familiar flavor profiles (za'atar, tahini, sumac, schug, dukkah) and plenty of colorful veggie salads and sides to dress up your table. From a comfort food perspective, it contains the most amazing grilled cheese recipe (feta grilled with Kalamata olives - heaven!), eggs and sumac soldiers, and many warming dishes that would be great for cooler nights (braised pomegranate short ribs, sweet shredded honey lamb, beer-braised holiday brisket, homemade pastrami).
*For those who keep kosher, please note that this is NOT a kosher cookbook - it contains shellfish recipes as well as meat mixed with dairy. However, most of the recipes are (or can be made) kosher with a little tweaking.

Modern Israeli Cooking: 100 New Recipes For Traditional Classics

Filled with one hundred delectable recipes, this book manages to respectfully meld old with the young chef’s new approach. This is food she grew-up eating and clearly infuses the narrative and recipe notes with humor, warmth and affection.

Each recipe has a color full-page photograph accompanying it which is a practical decision so if unfamiliar with the cuisine the user has a visual roadmap. Most of the ingredients are pantry staples, but a few, like sumac, Za’atar, may need to be purchased or researched. I found a number of recipes for the spice mixture Za’atar on the internet – all slightly different but all using common ingredients.

Organized in a unique way, the chapters are Weekdays, Fridays, Beach, Slow Cooking, Brunch, Midnight, Salads and Sides, Sweets and Staples. The index in the back of the book is helpful if wishing to find recipes based on ingredient – like chicken or lentils, etc.

I prepared Fattoush it is was fresh, delicious and seasoned perfectly with baked pita pieces that added an additional layer of crunch. And, after reading that one of the items in the Staple chapter was a favorite of the author, I also made Labane which was ridiculously easy and amazingly good. The fact that it is so much healthier than cream cheese or other high fat spreads is a plus. Overall, the recipe instructions are clearly written and should pose no problem for anyone but a novice cook.

Book specifics -- which I include because they may present issues to some users. This is a sturdy hardback with no dust jacket, instead the artwork is bonded to the cover. I much prefer this cover style because dust jackets may be torn or stained. The binding is tight so I folded the book – over-extended it open in sections -- and the binding loosened up and remained undamaged but now it lays open without closing right back up – a necessity for reading a recipe while the book is on the counter.

The paper is reasonably heavy but a light smear of liquid, wiped up within five seconds still warped the page, so to avoid damage, if possible use a cookbook holder and keep out of chopping and cooking range to avoid splashes.

Black ink is used throughout the book which is much easier to read than any other color which is helpful because the font size for ingredients and instructions is an eye squinting 9 point font. Since cookbooks are normally read while they are laying open on a counter top, this is a small size for people with excellent eyesight and extremely challenging for people with any eyesight issues.

A problem I had not encountered before, in my copy the pages were bound with the print quite close to the center crease so the book had to be pressed open, hard, to read important things, like the measurements for ingredients, etc.

The book itself is a wonderful way to learn and explore Israeli cuisine for those of us new to it and should provide a fresh new approach for those cooks familiar with these dishes.

Spectacular recipes

There is literally nothing in this cookbook that doesn't look absolutely delicious. Every recipe is accompanied by mouthwatering, high-quality photographs, taking the guesswork out of how it should look. The dishes in the photos are nothing less than what I would expect to see at a world-class restaurant.

packed with legalese

I used this book to study for the LARE Section 1. It’s an extremely thorough and detailed textbook going into a lot of the insurance, legal and contract parts of the business. It covers a lot of important things to know that don’t come up in the day-to-day of an intern’s work. Questions relating to these issues did come up on the exam, so I’m glad I read it, even if it is a dense and dry read.

For the LARE Section 1 exam, I studied Project Management for Design Professionals by Ramroth, Construction Contracts, 2nd Edition by Hinze, the PPI LARE Review Section A Practice Problems and the PPI LARE Review Section A Sample Exam. I passed.

Construction Contracts is a terrific textbook which I would recommend to every construction professional. The textbook not only explains the concepts smoothly but gives real life experiences and explains how and why they ended the way they did.

A must for all homebrewers.

If you are a homebrewer you NEED this book. I was blown away by the sheer amount of information provided. Gordon covers his exact methods for brewing award winning beer and includes a multitude of a tried & true recipes. I am extremely impressed with this book and I have already started planning my first brew sessions based on his recipes.

I am also impressed with the lack of fluff. This book is about making better beer. I have been brewing for over two decades and I rarely find anything new when I read a brewing book these days. This book is the exception. Highly recommended.

It advanced my techniques

I happen to appreciate Grodon's techniques on how to brew better -his latest book does not fall short. I am in the process of brewing some of his new receipes presented in this book: Christmas Saison, Blonde Classic and later Mailbock, and Oktoberfest in early July. I appreciate his attention to detail, how to read a recipe, how to adjust a recipe for your system. For me, this is a very good book because it helps me advance my techniques in brewing a better beer. Gordon's presentation is clear and concise. It also encouraged me to make better use of the Beersmith2 software, by adding brew notes before I brew, to edit the ingredient line with whole hops and correct the alpha % for all hops used so as to match the IBU's, to append first wort or worldpool steep to the hop lines and to add vorlauf to a malt, or add the Candy surup at flameout. Just detail, that maybe I should have been doing, but now find it as a requirement for me.

Great book for All-Grain Brewers

Just kegged my first recipe out of this book. Been to busy to brew until about a month ago, but over the last several months I've reviewed many of the recipes before deciding on the Scottish Heavy on P.105. I only made two changes by upping the Golden Promise another 8 oz. and adding 8 oz of Honey Malt. I really liked Jamil's Scottish Ale recipe in his Classic Style recipe and wanted to add some Honey Malt and up the Alchohol % a little bit. Anyway just tried a sample from the keg and it is amazing and spot on. Look forward to making again, and also trying the other recipes. I like how he has the recipes structured (like telling you when a certain malt should be added, and also including Water Treatment info in the recipe). Thanks Gordon for another great book.
