About the Author

Dennis R. Judd is a professor in the Department of Political Science and Fellow in the Great Cities Institute, University of Illinois at Chicago.� For many years he has been a major contributor to the literature on urban economic development, national urban policy, and urban regeneration in Europe and the United States; two books from this research program include Regenerating the Cities: The UK Crisis and the US Experience (co-edited with Michael Parkinson and Bernard Foley; Manchester University Press, 1988),� and Leadership and Urban Regeneration: Cities in North America and Europe (co-edited with Michael Parkinson; Sage, 1990). He is co-author of a leading textbook in the field of urban politics, City Politics (8th edition, Longman, 2011), and served as editor of the leading journal in urban affairs, the Urban Affairs Review, from 1985 to 2002. More recently he has been engaged in a sustained research program on tourism as an instrument for urban revitalization; publications include The Tourist City (co-edited with Susan Fainstein; Yale University Press, 1999), The Infrastructure of Play (edited; M.E. Sharpe, 2003), and Cities and Visitors (co-edited with Susan Fainstein and Lily Hoffman; Blackwell, 2004). His most recent book is The City, Revisited (co-edited with Dick Simpson). Currently he is working a book examining the tourist strategy to revitalize Chicago’s lakefront, and is leading a collaborative project on the policy problems of the Great Basin Desert in the American West. In 1997 he received the Chancellor’s Award for Excellence at the University of Missouri-St. Louis, and in 1998 he received the Career Achievement Award from the Urban Politics Section of the American Political Science Association. In 2013 the Urban Politics Section of the American Political Science Association honored him by naming its annual best book award the Dennis Judd Best Book Award in Urban Politics.

Todd R. Swanstrom has a Masters from Washington University in Political Science and a Ph.D. from Princeton University in Politics. The author or co-author of six books and over twenty-five scholarly articles, Professor Swanstrom also served as a neighborhood planner for the City of Cleveland and as Staff Director of Strategic Planning for the City of Albany. He is co-author of the prize-winning book, Place Matters: Metropolitics for the Twenty-first Century, rev. ed. (University Press of Kansas, 2005), which examines the relationship between urban decline and suburban sprawl. Recently, he has published articles on the prospects for alliances between central cities and distressed suburbs, economic segregation among municipalities, different ways of measuring poverty, and the development of a regional greenway in St. Louis. His current research focuses on metropolitan approaches to equity and theories of regional network governance. He is also doing research on the responses to foreclosures in six metropolitan areas and efforts to open up construction jobs to women and minorities. He is a member of the MacArthur Foundation's Building Resilient Regions Network which is working to build the field of regional studies and translate scholarly research for practitioners.

Good Devotional Commentary

I want to thank Crossway Books for sending me a copy of R.C. Sproul's new commentary on Acts to use in preparation for a series I am going to be teaching this Winter.

I would classify Sproul's work as a "Devotional Commentary" on the entire book of Acts. His writings are based on a sermon series that he presented at St. Andrews Church in Sanford, Florida. I believe that laymen and pastors will find his work interesting and insightful but not heavily exegetical. He is writing from a reformed background.

I thought that Dr. Sproul did a good job of touching on every chapter and main theme from the book of Acts. His stated goal in this commentary is, "to clearly explain God's Word and to show how we ought to live in light of it." He also states this is "not a technical commentary . . . . this is an expository commentary."

Dr. Sproul takes each section of Acts and gives us historical background, the intended purpose that Luke had in sharing the story and then application on how we should live today in response to God's word.

One of the main themes that he expounds upon is that of "obedience" to the Word of the Lord. This obedience is first seen right after Christ's Ascension when the apostles and other disciples go back to the upper room to remain in prayer and fellowship until the gift of the Holy Spirit is given.

Then their obedience is seen in how Peter and John refuse to stop preaching the Gospel when told to by the Sanhedrin. They properly state that they can not cease to share the Gospel since the Lord Jesus Christ very directly commanded them (and each of us) to take the Gospel to the ends of the earth.

We then see obedience in the life of Stephen who also will not be silenced by the religious leaders of the Jewish community. He preaches a sermon that gives a great gospel presentation and then results in his death. Stephen becomes the church's first martyr. He is obedient to the end.

The second half of Acts expresses Paul's obedience to the Lord through the task in-trusted to him on the Damascus Road. Paul never waivers from his task. He continues even in the face of death threats, lashings, shipwrecks, arrest, etc.

Obedience is what the Lord calls us to, the early church responded quickly and loyally to that call. They shared together all that they had. They stood up for each other, send money to each other, prayed for each other and never shied away from presenting the Gospel.

As you start a study in the book of Acts you will be greatly encouraged by Dr. Sproul's clearly written, easy to read commentary.

Gripping

The mark of a great non-fiction book is its ability to take a reader who has no prior knowledge, experience, or interest in a subject and draw him in so he can't stop turning the pages. Air Vagabonds does just that. Being neither a pilot, or particularly fond of non-fiction, I was somewhat cautious when this book was recommended to me by a friend. But once I started, I felt I was a part of this adventurous, lonely, and yes, sometimes foolhardy way of life.
Did I think the book was compelling? I'm over Greenland. Ice is forming on my wings. The cockpit heater has failed and the inside temperature is below zero. I'm thinking to myself, my god, what the heck am I doing here? Then I look up and realize that I'm in the safety of my easy chair, reading.

Excellent !!!

Wow, you won't put it down. This is one of those books that take you by surprise. The author and true adventurer of this book was right on the mark writing it. I can see it now, all his buddies and friends telling him, "hey, this is too much, you should write a book..." This dude did things which both amaze and fascinate. He is your average everyday guy who wanted some adventure and had lots and lots of guts. A better way of describing this guy and his adventures would be with the word "big" a few expletives and the word "balls." The writing style is superb, captivating and easy to follow. Totally well done.

The best pilot stories ever told

By chance, I happened to meet one of the pilots documented in this book. He is every bit the character that is portrayed within these chapters. I have met hundreds of pilots in my career but none of them had flying stories that could compare to the ones told in this wonderful book. As you move from chapter to chapter you find yourself covering vast distances and soon the reader is alone over the Pacific consuming pages of the book as steadily as the ferry pilots airplanes consumed precious fuel. This is a book of true pilot stories that will captivate every airman and intrigue the layman.

If this book has a thesis, it is a line the princess uses to describe the troubles her own daughters are going through as they try to assert themselves in the male-dominated society: "When normal is forbidden, people fall into the abnormal." With religious police watching over their morals, one wonders just how more "abnormal" these people and their country can be. The answer: quite a bit. After reading the first book about Princess Saltana (Princess) I knew that Daughters would be fascinating. And it is! The book discusses her 2 daughters and 1 son and picks up where her last book left off. Her youngest daughter is a devout Muslim with an extremely oppressive mentality towards her society. Her second child is a wild child by Saudi standards but her mother loves her just the same. And Princess Saltana's oldest child, her son is as compassionate and liberated as his mother. She raised him well. This story takes place in Saudi Arabia where women are treated as second class citizens. The men use their religion to justify all sorts of heinous crimes which is sickening when I thick about it. These men who degrade women are cowards but they get away with anything they want. In the USA they would be called pedophiles and locked up in jail. But in Saudi Arabia they are free to do exactly as they please. This is also about a country that regards wealth and physical attributes of the most important things in life, money and sex go hand and hand. And women are treated as property to gain social and economic power. Princess Saltana is a heroine for telling her story, even though her family found out about her first book. She is also a heroine for preaching women's rights in a land that has no rights for women. She is a heroine because she sees hope in the future for the women of her country. The book isn't only about her daughters it is also about Princess Saltana's life and family. She is a deeply moving person with a lot of conviction. And I can only hope that one day all the women in her country will be treated with the basic human rights that they all deserve - but do not have. I just found out there is a third book about Princess Saltana titled Princess Saltana's Circle, I am sure it will be an interesting read too. Also I want to say that Jean Sasson is a genius and a brilliant writer!

I can tell you that Jean Sasson knows what she is talking about, as I myself have had similar experiences living in Saudi, as have friends and family. I know that everyone is entitled to their own opinions, but many reviewers have said that the accounts in the books could not be true, because their Arab boyfriends told them, or because an Arab friend denies it. You would have to live in that country to know how true it is. And really live there, emersed in the culture, and society, and not living on some campus, or compound, surrounded by westerners, and with limited access to the average Saudi. I totally related to the books, PRINCESS, and DAIGHTERS, and found that some of the experiences the Princess had were exactly the same, or similar to things I myself had gone through, or others that I knew had. Those who think this book is fictional have obviously had no experience living in Saudi, or have some agenda, possibly someone who has been paid to give the book a bad review, as the Saudi government is very keen to keep up a facade, favourable to their royal family, and have been known to use these kinds of tactics, even going so far as to purchase large amounts of stock in certain media, either radio, television, and newspaper, to keep bad press about Saudi Arabia hidden from the outside world. These books are a danger to the Saudi Royal family, and I applaud Ms. Sassons courage, and that of the Princess for bringing the truth to the world, in a way that is both respectful, and in no way and indictment of the Islamic faith. Beleive me, it is true, and my only regret is that I only have 5 stars to give.

Sad but true

Princess Sultanas daughters is just as sad and heart wrenching as the earlier book Princess. It infuriates me to think about the hypocricy, brutality and insensitivity of Saudi men. I lived in Bahrain for 11 years and am also a Muslim. Jean Sassons books are a very accurate description of Saudi culture and the treatment of women, and it is very important when reading the book to realise that the injustices that are taking place in that country are based on years of tradition and not the Islamic religion. Once again, I think that point has also been stressed on numerous occasions throughout the books.
I admire the princess for her courage and strength and I adore the way she stands up to what is wrong. For those who may think that the "princess who told the story is an activist, but not much of one", it is obvious that the readers have missed a major point in these books. That is to illustrate the absolute helplessness of women in these societies. In a country where a women is raped by a man and then murdered by her father for 'allowing' it to happen, it is clearly difficult for women to voice their opinions. In a country such as the United States where there is freedom of speech it is feasible for people to form large powerful support groups to fight for a cause.....In Saudi Arabia, a group of women fighting for a cause would simply mean......the group of women would suffer! The princess has done the best she can in a country where the penelty for doing so is death. The women in Saudi Arabia are not "the most spineless creatures on earth", but are trapped in a society where no matter where they look they are alone and have no support, and understandably so prefer to live for their children.

A songwriter's bible! This book is the real thing! This book is gold!

I am very inspired to turn my poetry into songs, but I lack some of the basic song-crafting skills. I read a number of books with great titles but they were 99% fluff! I found Robin Frederick's "LEARN HOW TO WRITE A SONG: a step-by-step guide," on her website, robinfrederick.com, and it was FANTASTIC! I learned more on that website than I had from any of the books I had read! I advise you to visit her website, check out her "WRITE A SONG" guide and see for yourself. If you like what you see, you will want to have this book in your hands! BTW: You may not think your goal is to write a HIT, but what is a HIT? A HIT is a song that appeals to a lot of people. Who among us doesn't want to write songs that are appealing to others? Every "shortcut" in the book (except #1) has a "DO IT NOW" exercise associated with it to get you practicing the craft of songwriting immediately! If you want to be a songwriter (or a better songwriter) this is your book! I love it!

If you have the time to go through all the exercises and apply all 126 pieces of advice, I'm sure this book will at least help make your songs sound more commercial.

However if you are like me and are just looking to grab a few tidbits, let me distill this book down into one line:
Rip off popular songs.

I found a few other pieces of advice useful but that is the main lesson I learned.

I really like this book and Robin's style of writing, wit, music examples and practical application exercises
Remember these are shortcuts , they are excellent but do not go into great detail for each one
These are ideas to try and give you great practice
I am a student in a college taking many songwriting courses and much of this info I have seen in my courses and is great advice
For those of you serious about getting deeper into songwriting check out

About the Author
Ira Katznelson is Columbia University's Ruggles Professor of Political Science and History. Having served as president of the American Political Science Association, he is a member of the Academy of Arts and Sciences and the American Philosophical Society. He is also the author of Fear Itself and When Affirmative Action Was White.

Mark Kesselman is professor emeritus of political science at Columbia University and co-editor of the International Political Science Review. He is co-author and co-editor of European Politics in Transition and editor of The Politics of Globalization.

Alan Draper is a professor of government at St. Lawrence University. He is the author of Conflict of Interests: Organized Labor and the Civil Rights Movement, 1955–1967 and co-author of The Good Society: An Introduction to Comparative Politics.

I had to buy this book for my POLS 130 class at the University of Hawai`i: West O`ahu. Its an interesting read if you have a good teacher who pairs the reading with the lecture so you can further understand what is going on.
