About the Author
Hal Foster is Townsend Martin Professor of Art and Archaeology at Princeton University. A co-editor of October magazine and books, he is the editor of The Anti-Aesthetic, and the author of Design and Crime, Recording, The Return of the Real, Compulsive Beauty and The Art-Architecture Complex.

Rosalind Krauss is University Professor of Modern Art and Theory at Columbia University.

Yve-Alain Bois is an author and professor of Art History at the Institute for Advanced Study, Princeton, New Jersey.

Benjamin H. D. Buchloh is the Andrew W. Mellon Professor of Modern Art at Harvard University.

David Joselit worked as a curator at The Institute of Contemporary Art in Boston from 1983 to 1989 where he co-organized several exhibitions including "Dissent: The Issue of Modern Art in Boston," "Endgame: Reference and Simulation in Recent Painting and Sculpture," and "The British Edge."�He is Distinguished Professor of the History of Art at Yale University. Joselit is the author of Infinite Regress: Marcel Duchamp 1910-1941, Feedback: Art and Politics in the Age of Television, and American Art Since 1945.

Read this book. It will improve your mind.

Although I have read only the first half of "Art Since 1900," I feel compelled by the negative comments offered by other readers to express my considerable admiration for this book. Because I am not an academic or other art world insider, I have no axe to grind regarding which artists or movements may be under or over-represented in the text. After reading a number of books on modern art, I have found this one to be, on the whole, head and shoulders above the rest. For example, "The Shock of the New" by Robert Hughes is a fine book, but it is very superficial by comparison with this one. What impresses me most about "Art Since 1900" is the incorporation of ideas from other disciplines dealing with modernity, including philosophy, psychology, sociology, anthropology, linguistics, and literary theory, which provides a broader context for the subject than is usually presented in art history texts. For the benefit of those who are not already familiar with the intellectual history of the twentieth century, the authors include four introductory chapters and a glossary that help to familiarize readers with concepts of marxism, critical theory, psychoanalysis, formalism, structuralism, post-structuralism, and postmodernism. While the introductory chapters are not a substitute for wider reading on those topics, the authors succeed very admirably in making "highbrow" ideas accessible to "middlebrow" readers. But it is not necessary to master the contents of the introductory chapters in order to obtain a great deal of benefit from the remainder of the book. Each of the nearly 100 short chapters is, by itself, a polished gem that offers much food for thought, so that it is possible to approach the book by reading one chapter at a time and meditating on the ideas presented there for a while before returning to the text. In fact, such an approach may serve to resist the unconscious desire to oversimplify the great multiplicity of works and ideas that constitute modern art. While fragmentation is consistent with the postmodern attitude of the authors toward the subject matter, comprehension by others is facilitated by supplementing the chronological ordering of chapters with an inter-textual system of cross-referencing by artist and movement. Unlike more conventional art history texts, this book can provide readers with a greater appreciation of the capacity of modern art to provoke the kind of critical thinking that liberates the mind. What could be more useful in a society that is so thoroughly dominated by conformity and anti-intellectualism? If all Americans would read this book, the White House might never again be occupied by an ignoramous.

Art Since 1900 probably shouldn't be read by artists, younger ones at least. Here is where all your sincerity, all your peer support, all your sudden joy in thinking you've finally got it right this time, goes to die, splattered like meaningless bracken against the wall of Context, of History. Probably what's enraged so many people so much about this book is that its authors, scholars of 20th century art if there ever were any, aren't in the least afraid to make judgements, to call a bad idea a bad idea, to explore the limits of an artwork's relevance to the question: can art still matter? The criticisms of the book all seem to want to posit some grand democracy of artistic endeavor, or better still an anarchy, all the while ignoring the fact that we've already gone past the point of anarchy and moved into pure spectacle, which can only exist within the disavowal of history, and of judgement. Utopia's already here, but this book wants to mean more than that. Ultimately its message seems to be, simply: not making crap takes hard work. Read it and suffer.

Missing Chapter 4 of US version

This textbook is a great value and very useful. My only concern is that it does not include Chapter 4 of the US version, even though the seller write the description as "Same Content as US Edition in Different Softcover Design" Others have commented this in the reviews, but unfortunately I did not read that particular review before purchasing.

The text has a note at the top left of the cover that states"Circulation of this edition outside the Indian subcontinent is UNAUTHORIZED" as well as a disclaimer on the back cover that states "This international edition preserves the cutting-edge approach and pedagogy of the original, but may also feature alterations, customization and adaptation from the United States version."

Chapter 4 of the US version is on Linear Programming Sensitivity Analysis. While this is of course useful, since Excel's Solver has an output report for sensitivity, you don't REALLY need as much detail as the chapter provides because you don't need to do this manually. In addition, since Excel is so widely used, you can easily find via online search how to interpret this report.

This is one of the best textbooks that I have had. Not only is it useful for the class, but it is useful in the real world. So much that a few classes later, I found that this was of better use than the textbooks that were for the class that I was in. A whole new way to look at Undead

"Lords of Darkness" breathes new life (unlife?) into common villains of AD&D games: Undead. In addition to numerous essays front and back detailing suggestions for reffing the unliving, numerous short scenarios fill the center. Each scenario spotlights a particular undead type, for all levels of play.

I just finished running my players through the "Vampires" scenario, and it was hair-raising for them. They were under the mistaken assumption that they were in pursuit of one vampire. In fact, they were drawn into an ambush, assaulted by two vampires and lesser minions. Two in the party died quickly, but the PC's regrouped and triumphed.

And this was only one of the scenarios. Others, like "Zombies," "Ghouls," "Mummies," etc. appear equally challenging and innovative. The essays are full of fresh ideas (including how to ref your way around the level drain of some of the undead).

Ed Greenwood once again has illuminated an ignored facet of the AD&D game.

Creator Races & Nether Scrolls inside

The adventures are simple and short, but good. Perfect for an evenings entertainment, but not quite as detailed as some of the 3rd edition stuff.

This is one of the first books to mention the creator races and the Nether Scrolls. One of the adventures gives the characters a chance to go up against a greater mummy of one of the creator races, with a chance to walk away with one of the legendary Nether scrolls. I'm a fan of both those things, so for me, that adventure alone is worth the price of the book.

I've also found the dread lair of Alokkair the Lich (in this book) to be very handy, because it's set near Shadowdale, which is often a starting point for my campaigns.

I like this idea of the story and I loved the way the men were so patient with Lily, I do believe the author focused on trying to go to slow that when the ending came it was rushed to catch up with what had happened between the two. Still a great story and wonderful characters

From what I understand this is not an Amazon issue, but it's an issue of the publisher not providing page numbers for the e-book. I didn't realize this and now the book is useless to me because I can't cite information. Amazon has provided location numbers for the e-book, but the location numbers are broad unless you are citing a direct quote which means you can't cite a paraphrased sentence. I wish I knew this sooner because the refund period is over and I am going to have to re-purchase this book.

This book has incredible information about health care in the United States. It is an easy read. Has a ton of mind boggling statistics about our health care delivery system. This was a required book for my schooling, yet unlike most required readings-- I really enjoyed reading this book.

The History of Love spans of period of over 60 years and takes readers from Nazi-occupied Eastern Europe to present day Brighton Beach. At the center of each main character's psyche is the issue of loneliness, and the need to fill a void left empty by lost love. Leo Gursky is a retired locksmith who immigrates to New York after escaping SS officers in his native Poland, only to spend the last stage of his life terrified that no one will notice when he dies. ("I try to make a point of being seen. Sometimes when I'm out, I'll buy a juice even though I'm not thirsty.") Fourteen-year-old Alma Singer vacillates between wanting to memorialize her dead father and finding a way to lift her mother's veil of depression. At the same time, she's trying to save her brother Bird, who is convinced he may be the Messiah, from becoming a 10-year-old social pariah. As the connection between Leo and Alma is slowly unmasked, the desperation, along with the potential for salvation, of this unique pair is also revealed.

Krauss’s second novel (after 2002’s Man Walks Into a Room) originally appeared in abbreviated form in The New Yorker. That piece failed to capture the novel’s maddening complexity and brilliance. Critics describe History of Love as poignant, hilarious, and ingenious—and perhaps too smart for its own good. The literary pyrotechnics that some commended—the doppelg�ngers, the "decoding" of different journal entries, translations, and lists, the nested stories—confounded others. "The writer’s connections are closer to tangles," complained the Los Angeles Times, and mask a simple, powerful, message. Yet most reviewers, who quickly compared Krauss’s work to her husband Jonathan Safran Foer’s Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close (*** page 38), agreed that her work is more restrained, her characters more illuminating, and the novel as a whole a bit superior.

At some point I admitted to myself that I had no idea what was going on in this book and that apparently I lost the story; I felt bewildered. Scolding myself for attentiveness, I scurried back to try once again, taking notes lest I lose my way again. No matter, lost again to the end.

Pua and HeiHei level 2 reader, kids think it's hilarious!

HeiHei and Pua are our kids favorite characters in Moana. This level 2 reader follows their antics as the island prepares for feast day. Our kids were laughing the entire time they read it.

It's recommended for preschool - first grade. Our kindergarten twins were able to read this with little assistance. Our preschooler enjoys looking at the pictures and recognizes some of the sight words. The sparkly stickers are a fun bonus! The kids have had lots of fun with those.
