Excellent introduction to HCI for the complete novice.

While there are lots of HCI books around, many concentrate on the theory and recent areas of academic research.
Faulkner, however, endeavours to gently introduce relevant aspects of practical and theoretical HCI.
The book requires no previous or specialist knowledge. The aim is to make HCI skills a part of the general software engineering skill-set that the technical project teams possess.
HCI can be viewed as a specialist skill, but only when it is part of the generic engineering lifecycles will it make its true impact.
With this in mind Faulkner has put together a book that can key you into cconcepts and how they are realised, in quick and simple format.
Although this is not as detailed as some other books on usability engineering, it is not written for that purpose.
It is suitable not only for computer personnel who wish to add HCI to their own projects but also for managers who need to work with usability engineers, entry-level students and possibly end-users who will be required to participate in the usability engineering cycle.

An excellent launching pad.

Gives a useful overview in an easy to read digestible tome hence ideal if HCI is a subcomponent of a course you are taking - as it is for me. Recommended for everybody who is involved in professional software development. It's a small book and less that 200 pages at that so hardly onerous and you really ought to be familiar with this stuff.

Turn off the tape recorder

This book reads like it was simply transcribed from tape recordings of lectures. I closed my eyes and I almost felt like I was sitting in an uncomfortable chair in a lecture hall in Southpark, England. Really, very little effort was made to smooth out the prose. More importantly, the book offers little in the way of insight into HCI. Perhaps this is because this discipline doesn't really have much to offer; I'll reserve judgment on that until I find a better book.
This book starts out with a fairly interesting discussion about memory, vision, and hearing, but then makes essentially no connection between these early chapters and what follows. Except for the Earth-shaking insights that users can't remember a list of more than seven random things, and some people are color blind, etc. there isn't much actionable information that will help you design a better UI.
I suppose the chapters on user testing were somewhat helpful in understanding what HCI professionals need to do to evaluate user satisfaction, but overall the book left me still searching for a better text. At this point I'd say the best book on UI design I've seen so far is Cooper's "About Face."

Moose's best stories to date

I received a copy of this book from the author for an honest review.

I think this is one of S. Moose's best stories to date. I didn't give it a five star because it doesn't have as much drama, and breath stealing scenes, as her Infinity series - which I love.

I think the characters are much better built and I definitely like how Zara isn't a weak female. I prefer stronger lead females. She stands her ground even when it makes her miserable.

Treston is a damaged man. Struggling to get his act together. Zara really shakes his world right up!

If you prefer and love sweet love stories this one is definitely for you. It should be at the top of your TBR.

Had Potential ... Failed Miserably!

The first chapter had so much potential but like a soda that's been left sitting in a bottle it fizzled out and became flat as a pancake.

I was so excited after reading the first chapter because Tristan was a breath of fresh air for my reading mind. His POV was honest, raw and correctly accurate for a male character which is not easy for female authors. Unfortunately I'm starting to assume the first chapter was written by an actual male and the rest was finished by the author because the there was a significant difference between Tristan's POV from chapter 1 to chapter 27 and not in a "character growth" kind of way either.

The story itself was actually interesting but the execution was done wrong. Zara's character was shallow and weak and I felt nothing towards her; no connection no feelings, I'm not even sure I liked her. I guess her character was suppose to be sassy/feisty yet she was real immature and bitchy. What she did to Tristan at the charity function was downright mean, I couldn't even call that scene funny or justified. Tristan did a complete 360 from his "rules" the moment he seen the beautiful girl which made the story feel rushed. Even the love making scenes were short and rushed. There was no real emotion between the two characters in the most intimate position. They fell in love and he took her virginity all before the 50% mark and thats when the story fizzled out and dragged and dragged. The author clearly ran out of inspiration because the last 10 chapters were seriously all about them not being together but wanting to be together. The amount of times they kept going back to each other just to talk and walk away from one another again was annoying and completely irrelevant.

Ugh !!! I so wanted to love this book. The whole plot with Tristan losing his girlfriend with cancer in a car accident and finding love again could have been amazing. Add the fact that he slept with his dead ex-girlfriends mom and then her dad was plotting revenge on him and you should have had an epic novel. I just wish the author put more thought into the story and created more realistic and emotionally in-depth developed characters.

Side Note: really doesn't have anything to do with the novel but the back and fourth between "dumb" and "smart" quotation marks was really annoying. Where's a good editor when you need one?

MY FIRST S. MOOSE GAME AND NOT MY LAST!!! A MUST READ

Hello S. MOOSE, you have a new fan!!!

This was my very first book by the author and good lawd, I could not put this book down. I literally stopped everything to read and finish this book. The story line and the strong characters are what makes an amazing book, this book is freaking amazing!!!

We first meet Treston, from the start we know he's in pain and that he has a past. He has experienced loss and is just existing, living life because he has to. His passion is Lacrosse that is what identifies him, he's the Captain of the team at Duke University and ALL the girls want him. But, he doesn't want them, he let's them well you know... but no one will ever be let in. He has rules and those rules will not be broken. Or will they?

Zara, is the new girl in school. She's the freshman that everyone is raving about on the lacrosse field. She too has a story, she has always wanted to play for Duke University. Her boyfriend also plays lacrosse and he went and did the one thing she didn't want, he leaves Boston to join her at Duke. Big mistake on his part, she dumps the dude. All she wants is to play and focus on her game. Then... she goes to a party and meets the manwhore of Duke, Treston Parker. Their first meeting is #Epic!!! OMG, you know this story is good simply by that meeting.

Oh, S. Moose what you have done to me with this story. Do I love him, do I kick him, smack him, hold him? What? What do I do with this fine man. God, he's gorgeous and lost and confused and I can't help but love him!!! Dios mio lady, oh and that twist that BAM! moment in the story!!! I'm still sitting here going, oooohhhhhh he did what?! loved it. High five girl, I loved everything about this book!!!!

This an explorers notebook that lists possible points of departure for further exploration

This book is an edited transcript of six lectures Zeldin gave on BBC. He covers a diverse set of topics and supplemented the book with 36 thought provoking conversation starters, each with an original painting to encourage the dialog. I think the people who have rated the book low were expecting a clearly articulated thesis or well worked out methodology for "New Conversation." This is an explorer's notebook of possibilities glimpsed from Zeldin's rich set of experiences. He offers some very insightful points of departure on the value of conversation as a co-creation exercise and for on the job training. Read it to encourage your own experiments and explorations, as a point of departure, as a sketch of possible approaches to innovation, creativity, and knowledge work.

Mixed Messages is the debut novel by Up and Coming Author, LaTonya Williams. It is the story of 2 best friends, Mona and Kailah. Mona appears to have it all but underneath, she has issues that come to surface after an unexpected event shakes her life. Kailah is from the school of hard knocks, life has dealt her blow after blow......she almost loses her friendship with Mona after allowing her jealousy to cause her to make a bad decision. This book is the perfect blend of drama, sex, romance and friendship. It will make you laugh, and cry. I give this book 5 stars, it was picked as Book of the Month for our book club. Data science is the most important field of our generation

I am not a data scientist or involved in that field in anyway. Big data however is a huge part of the world and it is only getting more important as systems become automated and rely every more on collecting and analyzing large sets of data.

I was worried this book might be above my head given that I have no background in data science, or that it would be so dry and academic that it would put me to sleep. I am happy to say that the book was none of hose things.

This is a really, really interesting read regardless of your background. The author describes not only the current state of data science, but where it is rapidly headed in the future. Most importantly, everything in the book is grounded in the real world applications of big data that are all around us.

This is an interesting, enjoyable, and enlightening read.

I bought this book hoping it could help me to understand a bit more about algorithms and machine learning for a college course on data science. I was not disappointed. This book lays out difficult concepts clearly but without getting too basic or talking down to the reader. It was actually much more helpful than the course textbook in terms of both its clarity and its breadth.

I think that regardless of the level you are at in your understanding of data science, this book can help you. I'd recommend it to students, professionals, and casual enthusiasts. An easy five stars.

50 more shades of dysfunctional (spoilers)

I can barely begin to mention what's whacky with this story. It's a very glamorized case of Stockholm Syndrome that is highly sexual in nature with little to no explanation as to why the protagonist is forced to endure constant BDSM pain from her captive & then a complete 180 to tenderness after each sexual act with her captor Julian who always leaves her in pain/tears. The other author's works (science fiction series) are really good? Is there a new paradigm that I'm not aware of that makes kidnapping and torture sexy? I'm not saying I care what people do behind closed doors out of boredom or whatever, but too much of this pulp fiction is being passed off as acceptable literature and I'd never want a daughter of mine to think this is normal in any way. I kept expecting Julian (the captor) to be a vampire and this to turn into a fantasy novel but he was just clearly mental. Oh joy...please spare us from more of this tripe.

Setting the bar for Dark Erotica!!6

I have always been a fan of dark erotica and am always looking for good books in this genre to read, but as fans of dark erotica know it can be rather difficult because of how many different elements can be encompassed in the subject.  I have bought more than one book that just left me feeling sick to my stomach wishing I had never picked it up in the first place or some cheesy capture fantasy that you can't help but roll your eyes at through most of the story.  I was very happy to find that "Twist Me"  did not fall into either of these categories, but truly had all the elements I look for in a good dark book.  The book centers around Nora and Julian or otherwise known as Captive and Captor.  As soon as Julian sets eyes on Nora he decides he has to have her, and not giving her a chance to say no takes her.  What follows is,a whirlwind story filled with lots of twists, turns, pleasure, pain and love.  I loved how you were able to identify with Nora from the very beginning as to how she was feeling and her reactions to the circumstances she was in.  The emotion was real and could be felt in every scene in the book. It was easiy to identify with the conflict in the story, and did not feel overdone or exaggerated in any way.  The sex scenes were hot and thoroughly descriptive, but did not dominate the book so much as to take away from the story, and of course as any good dark erotica book will the story feels like it rips you to shreds in the middle but the ending makes it all worth it!  I enjoy sequels and was happy to see that although this one has one, it did not end on a major cliffhanger leaving you frustrated until the next book but has a great ending leading into second book.

Lay off the Virgins, Please

This is a really difficult review for me, because while I found the story utterly repulsive, I had an inkling about what I was getting into when I downloaded the book. I was curious after I read all the five star reviews, wondering what was so great about a book with such a dark theme. I personally think it was a well written book. It was engaging, despite the distasteful subject matter and character development issues. I did keep reading on, which is a real credit to this book, the subject matter being what it is. I was not familiar with the dark erotica genre, and now I know it is not for me.

This book is written for people who have rape fantasies (or those who just have kinda offbeat taste in reading materials). I am not judging because fantasy is just that-not reality. No one would actually want this situation to happen to them in real life, I get that. For me, it was hard to read about rape presented as a fantasy come to life though. This book absolutely destroyed my libido for the whole time it took me to get through it. Obviously there are plenty of readers that derive sexual excitement from the fantasy of a rich, domineering man kidnapping them and forcing sex on them, but I am not one of those readers. The content of this book was extraordinarily creepy to me, but in for a penny, in for a pound.

Characters:

I was perplexed by Nora's character throughout the book. In the beginning, I thought she had potential to be a tough lead and figure out a way to take Julien out or get off the island. But every time she would think, say, or act like a sane woman actually would in her situation, she backpedaled into passivity. There were so many completely unreasonable thoughts going through her brain and I really had to suspend disbelief. Julian rapes her, enjoys hurting her intentionally. She knows not to trust him. She recognizes the darkness in his eyes. But he's SO hot. Really? She finds out that he kidnapped her in the first place because she reminds him of someone from his past, physically. Instead of understanding that she is a husk to him, nothing more than a physical manifestation of someone else from the youth of this mentally damaged man, she thinks it's cute or sweet or something. She feels for him and comforts him. That part had me reeling. So while I found Nora to be an interesting character in some ways, I couldn't help but to be disappointed in her lack of critical thought overall, and how quickly she decides to abandon all thought of rescuing herself somehow. Her parents and friends are barely mentioned. She doesn't seem to think about them much while she is on the tropical island with her totally psycho hunk of a master.

I'm no expert, but I can't help but to think that Stockholm Syndrome must progress in a different way than it was presented here. Ignoring pain and rape because the perp is attractive doesn't make a lot of sense to me. I could see if the kidnapper was unusually kind and deliberately set out to gain sympathy from the victim, but just being good looking doesn't inspire loyalty or love. He had her date beat up while she watched and lorded his power to kill this boy over her to keep her in line! Why would she experience Stockholm Syndrome after that? Docking some points for disappointing and ineffectual heroine and implausibility of Stockholm Syndrome based solely on Hottie McHotpants' exterior.

I completely despised Beth's character in this story. She was my most hated character. This is a woman who has a troubled past. She was a mother of a daughter, and unfortunately had a lot of experience with bad sexual situations. And yet, she enables Julian to keep Nora penned up, totally stripped of her freedoms, and sexually and mentally abused, against her will. Her justification was that Nora doesn't know the meaning of having it bad in life. So she deserves to be a slave and a sex toy for a psychopath? Holy cow, I couldn't believe what I was reading! I thought she was way more evil than Julien could ever be. There was no redeeming this character for me. Heartless and cold, and absolutely devoid of morals or empathy. I am docking points here too with character development. I couldn't reconcile her past history with her actions. Beth was the very opposite of what I would expect her to be. Her attitude about this entire situation was so flippant, "But he is obsessed with you! Appreciate it, princess!" A woman who has had so many bad experiences with men that she doesn't want a man to touch her in any way, ever, should object when it comes to another young woman being subjected to sex and captivity against her will, IMO.

Julian was basically a flat character. I don't feel like I got to know him well. I was hoping for some more insight into his character, but there wasn't much development with him (the second book is partly from his POV from what I understand, so perhaps book 2 is where a reader will learn more about him). He's sick and twisted. The type of guy who takes what he wants instead of working for it. He faces danger every day and puts everyone close to him at risk because he likes the rush. Essentially, a narcissist, if you want to be kind. He's the absolute worst of the worst as far as possessing flawed character traits, and that doesn't change. Yes, we did get a sob story or two trying to explain away why he is such a basket case, but none of the background had me sympathizing with him at all. This is a man who thinks it's his right to have a sex slave that he can bend to his will without thought to anything but his own personal satisfaction, and that's about all the readers knows about him. Docking points for overlooking some backstory of this "hero".

The one thing that bothered me above all else in this book (the same major complaint I had about 50 Shades), is that the heroine is so young and inexperienced. As a reader, I find it cruel to use a barely 18 year old virgin in a story with this much sexual violence. It feels wrong to pair these naive girls up with predatory older men, and makes these stories even less palatable than they already are. It also enforces the gender stereotype that once a woman has been touched, she's ruined in some way. I'm sure my age and the fact that I have a daughter explain much of my distaste for the "abusing a young virgin" plot line, but really, beyond that, it's just pitiful and outdated that FEMALE writers use this lamb/lion trope over and over again, when it has been overdone since the age of the bodice rippers from the 70s and early 80s. I personally have had it with reading about these young victims! Where are the strong, confident women in these books? It's not an age thing, it's an attitude thing really. I don't care if they are 18 chronologically, but please give main female characters some backbone and mental fortitude!
