great book, great historical detail, great action, great descriptions of roman life; having walked in Pompeii many times, I can recognize most of the descriptions. I would definitely recommend before a trip to Italy!

En el segundo mes del reinado del emperador Tito (39-81), Marco Atilio Primo, ingeniero de acueductos es enviado a Campania para hacerse cargo del Aqua Augusta, en medio del sofocante calor del verano y de una intensa sequ�a un fuerte olor a azufre y la interrupci�n del suministro de agua que abastece varias ciudades y a la flota imperial ponen en alerta al ingeniero que temiendo que un terremoto haya segado la canalizaci�n del preciado l�quido. Usando su autoridad y bajo la protecci�n del almirante Plinio (23-79) tiene que sortear los peligros que le acechan, las taimadas intenciones del corrupto liberto Ampliato y restaurar el suministro de agua para evitar una crisis de racionamiento extrema. Todo parec�a haberse solucionado pero el Vesubio dormido durante lustros despierta, una gran erupci�n temida pero no esperada los sorprende a todos en sus tareas cotidianas, muchos huyen, otros se esconden y algunos regresan para contemplar la ira de Vulcano, Atilio solo piensa en volver a Pompeya a buscar a su amada Corelia, nunca antes estuvo tan cerca de la muerte y nunca antes su experiencia y conocimientos de acueductos le servir� para tanto.
Novela ambientada en los dias previos y en el desastre ocurrido el 24 de Agosto del a�o 79 DC cuando la erupci�n del volc�n Vesubio sepult� a las ciudades de Pompeya y Herculano adem�s de matar a miles de personas con una explosi�n Pl�nica nos hace unas extensas descripciones de las obras de ingenier�a hidr�ulicas, vulcanolog�a, las costumbres, estratos y condiciones sociales de la epoca romana asi como sus formas de pensar y de enfocar la vida. A pesar de harto conocerse el suceso hist�rico y sus consecuencias, la trama no deja de ser entretenida, din�mica y amena hasta el final.
