Dog Algebra: When Positive Reinforcement Fails To Solve The Problem, by Tammie Rogers

Sometimes things just don't add up.

Using positive reinforcement to train a dog can be a fun, rewarding, and successful endeavor.... until a cat saunters into the room. Offering food to redirect Buster’s attention away from Miss Kitty is often recommended, and as often it fails to diminish Buster’s fascination with felines.

When Cat = 100 and Hotdog = 4, there's little chance that the dog will simply take his focus off kitty, especially if he's not hungry.

In DOG ALGEBRA, Tammie Rogers solves the equation by offering a simple, straightforward, natural, and effective way to overcome training situations that positive reinforcement fails to resolve.

The common sense principles described in this book will help every dog owner develop a more trusting, confident, respectful, and enjoyable relationship with their canine companion.

DOG ALGEBRA is amazing, uncomplicated, winning advice all served up in a concise, easy to read book authored by a highly experienced educator of dogs and their people.

Solve for G where G = Good Dog!

Author of 4-H Guide: Dog Training & Dog Tricks (Voyageur Press, 2009) and T.E.A.C.H. Your Own Service Dog (www.Lulu.com, 2011), Rogers uses her 25 years of working with dogs and their people to continue her discussion on how to forge a happy, respectful and loyal partnership.

A nice antidote
By Pooch Professor
Do you have a dog who loves to learn, and loves to be with you? Maybe he already knows some behaviors like "sit," "lie down," and "stay"? I get a lot of calls from potential clients who tell me that their dogs already know these commands. When I say, "will he lie down and stay outdoors, with other dogs playing nearby, or if a squirrel runs past?" There is usually a laugh on the other end of the line.

There are a lot of books that will tell you how to teach your pet dog the basic behaviors. Dog Algebra is not one of them. This book is for those who need some help stopping behaviors. It doesn't give step-by-step instructions on stopping certain behaviors, though. It teaches you why rewarding the dog for the right behavior is great for teaching some stuff, but will not help you stop unwanted behaviors. Yes, you can stop unwanted behaviors without being cruel or abusive, despite what many "trainers" these days will tell you.

Don't be put off by the comparison to math! Rogers does make that comparison, but in an easy-to-read way that won't send you to your kids' room for help. The ability to use logic is an underused skill these days, but the author explains herself pretty well. And frankly, if you want a well-trained dog and you have no real idea why some things work and others don't, explanations can be helpful.

If you are looking for the "why" more so than the "how," this book about what dog training is and what it isn't could be for you. A brief history of the author's search for logic, experiences training her own dogs, and the rise of clicker training are followed by a reasonable push for something that truly adds up: balance in dog training.

I'm a big believer in balance in all things. In dog training, it actually doesn't mean "things equally weighted," though. It means "giving the dog all the information it needs to be successful." All good dog trainers know that even balanced training is heavily weighted towards positive reinforcement--rewarding the good--during the teaching phase. But what distinguishes some trainers from others is what else besides positive reinforcement they are willing to use to communicate with the dog and improve his understanding. Because after the teaching phase comes the "proofing" phase, and that's where the validity of "only positive reinforcement" slips out the window.

Balanced trainers are willing to give more information to the dog. As Rogers explains, this need not be harsh or punitive if one approaches it correctly. Her explanations can be lengthy, but they do make sense. She wrote the book in part to counter the "positive is the only way, corrections are abuse" mantra that seems to be all the rage these days. She makes a nice argument, and it's worth the read.

I Highly Recommend It!

Tammie Rogers's book, Dog Algebra, should be on the top of your reading list when it comes to training dogs.

I have always tried to be open minded when learning anything. Especially when it involves dog training. Some trainers insist on positive only methods as though anything else doesn't work. I want a well trained dog.

I have learned that raising dogs has many parallels to raising children. I was raised by good parents who made it very clear to me what was acceptable behavior and what was not. My parents praised me but they also disciplined me.

Tammie's book offers solid reasons why a balanced method of training works. Positive reinforcement is a valuable and essential training method, in conjunction with other methods. It does not stand alone in training a dog. This is not a book that slams other methods of training. It is one that clearly explains all methods of training and why they work. It will help you build a foundation to successfully train a happy and obedient dog.

Tammie has a wonderful gift of explaining how and why a dog learns. With the information in this book, you will gain a common sense understanding of how a dog can learn to be a wonderful well behaved companion. I highly recommend it.

Dog Algebra
By Chuck
I've been training dogs for a "long time", and there is nothing here that is new or surprising to me. For someone new to dog training, there may be some insights that are new, however I'm certain there are many trainers today that would see this as a step backward. I don't feel Tammie has made any "great breakthroughs" in training here.
