Perhaps the best Spanish phrase book...

I'm trying to learn Spanish on my own using an assortment of dictionaries, CDs, language guides and texts, and a couple of phrase books. In my search for learning aids I examined a number of phrase books; none were perfect, but this one seemed to have a better balance of features than most:
- Pocket-sized, with good quality flexible paper (not too stiff!)
- A Spanish-English & English-Spanish dictionary, with words indexed to phrases
- A basic language and grammar guide, incl. common verbs and conjugations
- Straightforward clear translations on a broad variety of topics
- Well-organized, clean layout, helpful pronunciation guidance
- Uses illustrations as an aid in appropriate places (e.g. body parts, parts of a car, etc)

Like most phrasebooks, the dictionary section is limited by the space available, but this one seems to include most of the words that are mentioned in phrase section. Still, you'll want to have a real dictionary to supplement this (or any) phrasebook.

What would make this worthy of 5-stars?
- Each section is color-coded along the edge, but there is no color key along the outside cover of the book. This would make it easier to quickly find and locate sections.
- The introductory sections on "Survival Spanish" (key phrases) and the language overview should be beefed up a bit. The grammar section has a surprising amount of useful guidance on verbs, but is much more sketchy about other rules of the language. Another 5 to 10 pages on grammar would go a long way toward making this a near-perfect phrase book.

After carefully examining a number of Spanish phrasebooks, I'm not sure that any of them are quite worthy of 5 stars... but the Frommer's is *very* good and has been the best that I've found.

Remember high school Spanish?

... Neither do I. But it's amazing how much comes back to you with this little book gem. I just spent 5 days in the guts of Mexico City on business and I really enjoyed this book. It's small enough to carry around discretely and well organized (like "stuff to say in restaurants" and "stuff to say at hotels"). Really nice for short trips to Mexico. If you ever had high school Spanish - even a million years ago like me - this is a great book because you will kind of remember how to talk Spanish but you'll have forgotten the words. I highly recommend it.

Right size, wrong book

We selected this phrasefinder thinking it would have good basic information to help us get around in Spain. It was somewhat useful for my husband, who only remembered a few words of high school Spanish and was able to use it to refresh his memory. But, beware: there are mistakes, including a big one on p. 28 of the "Spanish Grammar Basics" section which confuses the verbs "ser" and "ir." Also, this book is full of Latin American words and expressions which don't work in Spain. And, the dictionary in the back is just too small to be of any consequence. It became our running joke that, each time we encountered an interesting new word, it wouldn't be in there. We wouldn't recommend this book, but suggest choosing a compact (well edited!) Spanish-English dictionary for use on your travels.

packed with legalese

I used this book to study for the LARE Section 1. It’s an extremely thorough and detailed textbook going into a lot of the insurance, legal and contract parts of the business. It covers a lot of important things to know that don’t come up in the day-to-day of an intern’s work. Questions relating to these issues did come up on the exam, so I’m glad I read it, even if it is a dense and dry read.

For the LARE Section 1 exam, I studied Project Management for Design Professionals by Ramroth, Construction Contracts, 2nd Edition by Hinze, the PPI LARE Review Section A Practice Problems and the PPI LARE Review Section A Sample Exam. I passed.

Excellent for Beginner to Expert

I have used Professor Craven's website for over the last 3 years as part of my curriculum in teaching computer science at the high school level. His explanation and examples are excellent and my student's just can not get enough!
If you want to develop a strong and consistent method to becoming a programmer start here. These methods are applicable to all lines of programming.

Great book for learning Python and Game Programming

I had went through some of this book online at the author's web site and didn't really have time to finish it, which is why I bought this book (in Kindle version). I look forward to re-studying this in the future. He goes through every basic thing such as setting up the environment (I was able to use Eclipse in Linux successfully with this book even though he doesn't give step-by-step instructions for that - his is Windows based), and gives good exercises to help one think about how to solve programming problems. Also he teaches even those unfamiliar with Python how to use Python especially for creating games. Awesome book and highly recommended.

Best information on pygame

I would give this book 5 stars. I have never really gotten a good understanding of sprites and collisions. By working through chapter 18, and working through the code, I came away with a workable knowledge, especially of collisions, which was the real problem. I've been working with python and pygame for a while and there are many good videos to help, but books that really help are rare. This book and web-site, which contains videos is the best place to start. Don't discount the other videos, use everything that will help, but starting out, this book and website will be a great jump ahead to everything making sense. Hopefully Dr. Craven will keep updating the material as python and pygame continue to evolve. Great job!

About the Author
A. Bruce Wells was born in Louisville, KY in 1954 and became a Christian in 1977. He began working in the ministry in 1979 and in 1983 left secular employment for full time ministry. That same year Bruce formed BEAUTIFUL FEET MINISTRIES, INC. the non-profit organization under which Bruce would work as a traveling minister, missionary, and pastor. Invitations to speak to a large variety of churches has taken Bruce to 48 states and a number of foreign countries including New Zealand, Australia, Peru, and England. His teachings on Easy Evangelism have been requested and used in quite a number of countries due to the popularity of the series. Many pastors have said that it is the best teaching series on evangelism they've ever heard and it has helped thousands of inexperienced Christians lead others to Christ. Bruce and his wife Marsha love being around the water and they enjoy the perfect winter weather of southern Florida. They have lived on the east coast of FL since 1999 with their 3 sons, Joel, Nathan, and David, all musicians like their dad, and Bruce still travels worldwide in ministry. He continues to write and enjoys playing, writing, and producing worship music. Life is good.

Outstanding; Financial Grace and Wisdom without the Legalism. Who knew?

Wow! Thank God for this book! What an incredible gift, for us to be able to actually hear the same Holy Spirit who gave Solomon his wisdom, Abraham his wealth, and led Jesus and His followers into successful ministries. God knows virtually everything about every person, investment, and situation on the planet, and I'm amazed at how hungry this book has made me to know the Holy Spirit better. Mr. Wells' book is very uplifting and full of hope for anyone who needs God's help. It is chock full of testimonies and promises on how God can, and will, talk to us about anything we could possibly need to know. This book is more about the Holy Spirit's leading than money, and now, more than ever, I want a walking, talking relationship with God as Wells convincingly writes about in this book. If you don't want more of God, don't get this book. But, if you do, buy it now!

The Bible affirmed fact that God will help us to make money, without all the legalism that is usually taught, is probably a major revelation for most of us. After reading this book, I feel totally released from the limitations and burdens placed on me from my religious background. I finally feel that I'm really part of God's family, and that He actually "wants" to bless me. The guessing and mystery of obtaining God's help with money matters is finally solved.

Eye Opener

I loved this book! I would give it 10 stars if they would let me. I was immediately hooked when I read the excerpt on the back of the book that pointed out how, when Peter needed money for taxes, Jesus simply told him where to find the money he needed. How easy is that? There was no jumping through the usual religious hoops, no rebuke from Jesus, no fellow disciples trying to tell Peter why he was in that situation and that being poor was a good thing; and there was no period of "financial probation," as is often implied in the church, before God would meet this very real financial need. This is probably way too much grace for most of us, but it's still true!

What a concept? Financial provision as a part of redemption and grace, without having to prove that you deserve it! Believing that God will actually talk to us, and lead us to financial opportunities simply because we belong to Him, is almost too good to be true, but the abundance of scriptures mentioned in this book are incontrovertible, and it is true. As with Wells' other books, this one is very liberating, sensible, and full of useful information. Thank God for Wells and others like him who are able to take a simple subject that has been polluted and made to be difficult, and bring it back to the uncomplicated, raw basics that will work for anyone. The Gospel truly is good news when the confusion has been stripped away.

The Church needs to know the Fullness of each believer's redemption through our salvation which includes a new life in Christ, divine healing, prosperity, and wealth. Bruce Wells does an excellent job of teaching believers Whose they are and what was guaranteePulpit in my Kitchend to them individually upon The Cross of Calvary 2,000 years ago. He dares the reader to forsake tradition and legalism for a new found freedom in Christ by examining God's Word and challenging us to believe God for the ENTIRE package of grace in the "now". This book is both practical AND scriptural.It is must reading for those who chose to do it Christ's way, not man's.
